When UV Pipe Repair Is the Right Solution — and When It Isn’t

UV pipe repair is a valuable tool. It’s efficient, minimally disruptive, and in the right situation, it can restore pipe integrity without excavation. But it’s not the right solution for every pipe, every defect, or every project. One of the most important parts of damage prevention is knowing when not to use a particular method. UV cured repairs work best for specific sanitary sewer defects where the pipe structure can be rehabilitated effectively. They are not a catch all solution, and they shouldn’t be treated like one.

Before any repair decision is made, the inspection matters.

The condition of the pipe matters. The type of defect matters. And how the pipe fits into the larger system matters. I’ve seen projects where UV repair was assumed to be the answer before the inspection even happened. That’s backwards. The inspection should guide the solution—not the other way around.

In some cases, a mechanical repair makes more sense. In others, replacement or a different approach is required. The goal isn’t to sell a repair method. The goal is to fix the problem responsibly and avoid creating a bigger one down the line. At Center Line Locating, we look at UV repair as one option within a larger decision making process. When it’s the right fit, it can be a great solution. When it’s not, we say so.

Damage prevention isn’t about pushing a method. It’s about making the right call based on real conditions.
